Machining this alloy SS 409 Plate produces tough, draggy chips with heavy build-up. While this alloy SS 409 Plate can be machined in the annealed condition, SS 409 Plate tends to perform better in the cold drawn or heat treated condition.

With small additions of nickel to improve corrosion resistance and toughness even in welded condition, 409Ni (409NiCb) is a low-chromium columbium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel. It is not as high-temperature oxidation or resistant to corrosion as the higher alloyed stainless steels ( for example 304SS or 430 SS) / 409Ni is ductile and does not harden to any appreciable extent by cold working. 409Ni should not be used in cryogenic applications because a danger of brittle transition and fracture at sub-zero temperatures.
